Looking for a free app to learn history? HistroQuest lets you start with free stories and try the learning sequence for yourself. Read or listen to a historical situation, form your own answer and discover what happened next. The app is available for iPhone and Android in English and German.

This guide helps you get started: what can you try, what should you look for, and how do you distinguish free content from a Premium offer?

What does starting free mean in HistroQuest?

HistroQuest offers free stories, with further content available through Premium. Choose a free story first to experience how the narrative, activity and explanation connect. The current selection and available offers are shown in the app.

“Start free” does not mean the entire catalogue is free. Before purchasing access, check the price, billing period and included content. The offer displayed in your app or store is the one that applies to your purchase.

How to try a history learning app

You do not need a plan for all of world history to get a first impression. Choose a free story that interests you. Allow enough time for the opening section and for reading or listening to the explanation after your answer.

  1. Understand the situation. Who is involved? What are they trying to achieve? What makes their task difficult?
  2. Explain your answer. Use the information from the story to make a choice. A map may draw your attention to geography; an estimate asks you to consider relative quantities.
  3. Read the explanation. Compare your reasoning with the historical outcome. Which information mattered?
  4. Describe a connection. Explain in your own words why the situation was difficult and what happened next.

An incorrect first answer gives you a reason to examine your assumption. Use a hint and try again. Your choice is part of the learning activity; it does not rewrite the past.

How can you tell whether the format suits you?

Consider whether you can explain more than a date after finishing a section. Do you understand the aims of the people involved? Can you describe an important cause or consequence? Does the story make you curious about the next question? These questions help you decide what you want from a learning resource.

HistroQuest combines illustrated narratives with audio, decisions, maps, estimates and quizzes. Clio guides you through each story. Read or listen, then take part in the reasoning. Activities use different formats to explore the historical situation they belong to.

Learn in the app or in your browser?

This website explains the concept and offers practical learning ideas. HistroQuest’s interactive stories and games run in the installed app. Choose the App Store for your iPhone or Google Play for your Android device.

To continue exploring in a browser, use a background article, digital museum collection or map to investigate a question from your session. Look up something specific that caught your attention while playing. Our guide to learning history online describes several starting points.

Turn your first attempt into a learning routine

After playing, note a question you would like to explore further. At the start of your next session, briefly recall what you discovered. You can revisit a decision or continue with the next section.

About the Author Niels Cimpa

Niels Cimpa is an Austrian learning coach, memory trainer and the creator of HistroQuest. With a background in education, engineering and public service, he has always been fascinated by how people learn — and why some knowledge stays with us while other information is quickly forgotten.

He created HistroQuest to make history easier to understand, more exciting to explore and much harder to forget. Instead of simply presenting dates and facts, the app combines narrated stories, historical decisions, vivid illustrations and interactive guessing games.

At the heart of HistroQuest is a simple idea: we learn best when we are curious, actively involved and unafraid to make mistakes.
